5 Secrets to Successful Home Business Ownership

I want to share some of my top 5 secrets to running a successful home business. Running a home biz shouldn’t be difficult or stressful. After all, we all decided to embark upon this journey so we could rid ourselves of the “golden handcuffs” and to be more available for what really matters in life…

…our Faith
…our Family
…our Friends

This equates to Time Freedom!

Unfortunately, so many times we enter into this home business ownership thing not having a clue as to how to really make it happen. So without further ado, here’s my 5 Secrets to Successful Home Business Ownership. Enjoy!

1. Create a work environment that you feel good in.

You want your work space to be comfortable, peaceful, and an environment where creativity thrives. Things like lamps, pictures, wall hangings with inspirational quotes, painting the walls with invigorating colors, and even your diplomas/certifications can create a work space that you can feel good in. I would also recommend ergonomic office equipment like chairs and keyboards that will reduce tension and incidental injuries. Since you’re going to be using that space for work, you want to make sure it’s conducive to spending a good amount of time in.

2. Keep your overhead to a minimum.

Business growth and wealth building have less to do with how much money you make and more to do with how much you keep. If most of what you bring in goes to your overhead costs, you’ll have less money to spend on marketing and paying yourself. Remember why you started your business in the first place – to replace your current income and be able to do so from home.

For example, I have very little overhead costs. The costs that I have include things like domain hosting, training/education, and basic office supplies.

3. Determine where you can be most productive and work there, even if it’s outside of your home.

It’s super duper important to have a place where you can work outside of the home. Having a alternative location is good, especially if you have a spouse and children, who may interrupt your work day, on occasion. You may also have a “mental” block in your creativity and just need to change scenery from time to time.

I highly recommend a local coffee or doughnut shop, your local library, or even a nearby park. You want someplace that’s close enough to your home that you’re not wasting time commuting to the alternative location. Just a few caveats on your alternative location:

  • Be sure you have an internet connection (theirs or bring your own WiFi)
  • Be sure you have electricity (or have all of your devices fully charged)
  • Be sure you avoid “rush hour” times (i.e. breakfast & lunch times)

4. Work on your business, not just in your business.

While it’s important to have a reliable product and provide your clients excellent client service, many home business owners limit their focus to just that. In order for your business to be successful, you’re going to have to do with ALL business owners do – and that’s work on your business. What I mean by that is focusing on things like your marketing plan, training/education, business strategies, finances, vision, and productivity systems, etc. These elements provide the infrastructure for your business and allow it to run effectively.

5. Don’t hide it, FLAUNT IT!!!

Many times we hide the fact that we are Mompreneurs running our businesses from home. I think this is seeped in the fact that it may not seem as professional and we could potentially lose clients who view us differently than those who operate traditional brick and mortar businesses. The image of a mom with rollers in her hair; pink, fuzzy slippers on; and children pulling at her hem is something we may fear portraying to our prospective clients. While that may be understandable, we should instead look to flaunt our home business as a benefit to our clients – i.e. low overhead and intimate customer service. Flaunt it, Ladies! Don’t hide it!

I hope this tips were helpful for you to grow your business as a Mompreneur!
